It's nice when people surprise you

"Westlife can go and take a shit"

Good advice from Liza Tarbuck.

John Peel

The many tributes in the press and all over the internet on messageboards and so on do the job much better than I could of saying something worhwhile about the contribution John Peel has made to both music makers and music listeners over the last 40 years.

However, I just need to say that I thought it really great last night as I listened to Steve Lamacq in Peel's old time slot playing lots of old session tracks, that both my neighbour downstairs and my neighbour next door were both listening to the same show.

I had this image of people all over the country sitting up till 1am listening under the bedclothes and remembering the 65 year old man who had the same thirst and love for new music as he'd had as an 18 year old.

John Peel, we salute you.

DK

Just back from a week in Denmark where for the first time in a while I didn't come back with any Danish music. There was just nothing there that caught my eye. Usually I go on word of mouth and reviews that I don't 100% understand, not the best policy for deciding what music to buy you might say. In any case, this time I was going with no knowledge of any of the new records that were out there so this made it impossible and I ended up with nothing.

The only thing that vaguely tempted me was an album by Norwegian singer Annie who I've mentioned before. The album isn't fully available in the UK but I decided that my excitement for the record was artificially built up by reactions to her on the the ILM board and therefore I would hold off just now. This may seem stupid given I liked the single but it was enough of a reason it give it a miss this time.

I was disappointed to be coming away on the Saturday night as it meant missing the Nordic Music Awards and the chance of seeing Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue performing in amongst Danish, Swedish and Norwegian acts. In the run up to the Saturday though I had seen some of the build up as both Danish and Swedish channels that I had access to were broadcasting daily half hour programmes on the nominees with interviews and so on. I often wonder in these cases whether artists, when they are being interviewed away from their home market, are a bit more laissez-faire with what they say...

Take The Darkness (Please. Ha Ha) for example. On being asked about Robbie Williams whom they supported at his huge Knebworth shows the lead singer (who surely must be about 40)said "Well as a singer he's pants and let's be honest his songs are shit. That's not being arrogant is it, it's just the truth". Be aware this quote may not be 100% accurate but I'm sure I remember it closely enough so you get the idea. Would he have said this if interviewed by a British journalist? Actually maybe he would, it's not that much of a controversial opinion but it's nice to think you've been privy to something exclusive and controverisal.

Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold

There is a team currently lying second bottom in the Finnish football league called FC Jazz.

Is their matchday programme called The Jazz Mag?

Certainly their coach at half time must be saying 'Don't worry lads, it's not about the goals you score, it's about the goals you don't score."

Would John Motson simply be commentating with one word comments...'Nice', 'Grooovy'?
