Hello...is there anybody out there?
Yes I've been neglectful, not posting but then so much has happened over the summer that there hasn't been enough time or money for any music related stuff. I've moved house as those few who are reading this already know. This involved the dilemma of anyone moving who has a fair number of records - where the hell do you put them, is there enough room to have them out in the living room, do you have to split your collection, can you buy big wall mounted units so that all the vinyl, cds and boxsets can all be out on display?
Actually I really didn't want them all out on display as they're not the most attractive thing in the world but I have managed to find wall space for most of my cd albums with some free magazine things, the singles and the vinyl being hidden away in a cupboard and the boxsets in a bookcase in the study. All in all not too bad a solution and there's is still room to expand the albums in the living room. As I buy new stuff I think I'll remove some of the free mag cds I've got in my units and replace them with proper bought cds but I've got nice high ceilings so there's enough room to expand up.
Finally got the computer set up on a proper desk so for the first time I have room to breathe whilst using my computer. A proper desk makes such a difference, there's now room for my speakers and I can stretch my legs out too. Just need to get a proper adjustable chair and I'm all set. The new position rather than being sat on the floor has meant that I've been able to finish off ripping some cds I got from the library (Fleetwood Mac, T.Rex, Future Pilot AKA, Kanye West, Alice Cooper) and also made me think about tidying up my hard drive and deleting some mp3s that I'm never going to listen to so I have more room for albums from my own collection on there. Most of my iTunes library seems to be tracks from the lending library or that I've downloaded and not enough of my own stuff so that needs to be remedied. The downloaded stuff largely exists on CD somewhere anyway so I'm not losing it for all time. Need to be more ruthless. Also means on random play I'll be hitting more good stuff and missing out the rubbish.
It's all very nice having 60 CDs worth of Beach Boys outtakes or 20 CDs of Beatles Get Back rehearsal outtakes and at times I may want to hear them but there's no need for it to be taking up space on the harddrive as I don't want to hear it that often and certainly not on the way to or from work which is when I do most of my listening.
Been listening to the reissues of Adam And The Ants two most succesful albums Kings of The Wild Frontier and Prince Charming and man they were unusual. For them to be the biggest pop band of their time with number one hits proves how important a strong image can be especially when it's so overtly tied into their lyrics. This is strange pop music with drums high in the mix, very unusual backing vocals, unusual strong structures and sometimes not even conventional pop melodies. It works and sounds great on the whole but for top 10 pop music it's very adventurous but then this was in the days when O Superman could be number one.
In other news not music related I bought a bike yesterday from a friend so I may be shooting about the countryside on that just shortly. Going to take some getting used to though as I don't think I've ridden a bike since I was about 14 or 15 and certainly never ridden one with gears. It felt good though for the 5 minutes that I was shooting about on the lane at the back of the house last night. Going at speed with the wind in your hair is pretty cool and it's true that you never forget how to ride a bike but it doesn't mean that you're not going to be a bit wobbly for a while. Not sure how confident I am going out onto the road with it though.
